Crazy space facts

#1 - Mars

Mars

Mars is the red planet that we are still learning so much about. It is one of our closest neighbors - but did you know that it has the tallest mountain in our solar system? Olympus Mons is about three times higher than Mt. Everest.

#2 - Neptune

Neptune

Neptune is the big blue planet in the solar system; it’s very cold! Did you know that Neptune wasn't a random name given to the planet? Neptune was originally the Roman god of the ocean!

#3 - Saturn

saturn

As we all know, we have a moon circling the Earth which brings us tides. Imagine how confusing it would be if we had even more! Saturn, the largest planet in the solar system has an unbelievable eighty two moons circling it.

#4 - Mercury

mercury

Talking of moons, how would you feel if we didn't have any at all? Mercury is not only the closest planet to the sun, it also doesn’t have any moons circling it. This is because it is so close to the Sun’s gravity that it wouldn’t be able to hold on to its own moon. Sounds like it would be a very hot and difficult place to live!

#5 - Uranus

uranus

Ever heard of a gas giant? Not that kind of gas! There are some planets that hold so much natural gas that you can't even see the planet's surface! Uranus is one of these very special planets. It is also the planet in the solar system which gets the coldest weather.

#6 - Venus

venus

Some planets shine just that little bit more than others. If planets had an ego we think this one would think highly of itself. Venus, named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty, is also known as “the morning star” and “the evening star”.

#7 - Jupiter

jupiter

Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. It’s so big that it has seventy-nine moons. Scientists have measured that Jupiter’s mass is 318 times that of our Earth!

#8 - Earth

Earth

Can you think of what's left? Have we missed any? Let's think… OH of course! Earth. None of the other planets can claim this amazing fact. Earth is the only planet to have this incredible inhabitant. Can you guess who it is? That's right it’s YOU!
